The Directorio de Empresas Industriales: what it is

The industry ministry keeps a directory of companies that registered with it. It is small: 1,422 rows in all. 885 have a manufacturing activity. The rest are mostly software companies, which the same rules send to this directory.

Testigo dropped 235 rows that look like natural persons, because the name has no legal form. That leaves 650 companies.

The file's name carries a date in 2023, but its content is newer. The latest registration in it is from the end of July 2026, and that is the edition date used.

What "active" means in Uruguay

The status in this directory is about the registration, not the company. Vigente means the registration is current. Vencido means it expired.

Most are expired: 445 against 205 current. Testigo loads both and shows the status as written, because a company can keep producing after its entry in this directory lapses.

The tax ID: RUT

A Uruguayan RUT has 12 digits. The same number identifies the company in the state's register of suppliers, which lists a fiscal address and a status for 119,137 suppliers of all kinds.

Official lists and Testigo's checks

No sanction list is loaded for Uruguay.

Because this directory publishes a website and an email, Testigo's own checks have something to run on here: whether the website responded, which certificates it names, and whether the email domain accepts mail. Each result carries its date. A named certificate is the company's claim, not a confirmation.

What is not checked

  • Manufacturers that never registered with the ministry. The directory is far from a full census.
  • Whether a company with an expired entry still operates.
  • The plant's exact position.
  • Certificates, capacity, quality and financial health.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a public list of manufacturers in Uruguay?

Yes, a small one. The industry ministry publishes its directory of industrial companies as open data, under a licence that allows commercial reuse with attribution. It gives the tax ID, names, activity code, address, phone, public email and website. It lists only companies that registered with the ministry, so it is not a full census.

What do Vigente and Vencido mean on a Uruguayan record?

They are the state of the company's entry in the industry ministry's directory. Vigente means the registration is current. Vencido means it expired. Most entries are expired. It is not a statement about whether the company operates, so Testigo shows both and writes the status as the directory does.

Why does Uruguay have so few plants on Testigo?

Because the only public source with names, activity codes and contacts is a directory that companies join by registering with the ministry. It holds a few hundred manufacturers. Testigo did not find a wider official list with activity codes. The count in the source and the count loaded are on the coverage page.
