The Directorio de compañías: what it is

The regulator of companies publishes one spreadsheet of every company under its supervision: 228,099 rows in the edition read. It covers companies only. Sole proprietors are not in it.

Each company has an activity code in CIIU, the international classification. 14,840 are in section C, manufacturing. 11,767 of those have the legal situation ACTIVA, and those are on Testigo. The other 3,073 are in dissolution, liquidation, cancelled or inactive.

What "active" means in Ecuador

ACTIVA is the company's legal situation with the regulator. It means the company has not entered dissolution or liquidation and has not been cancelled. It is a legal status, not a sign that a plant is producing.

The tax ID: RUC

The RUC of an Ecuadorian company has 13 digits. It is issued by the tax office, SRI, and the companies regulator publishes it next to each company.

Official lists, and one that could not be read

No list is loaded for Ecuador.

The tax office, SRI, publishes a list of ghost companies and files of the RUC by province. Its site timed out or returned a placeholder page each time it was tried, and the national open data portal refused the request. So those files were not read, and it is not known whether they would add establishment addresses.

What is not checked

  • Where the plant is. The address is the registered one and the position is approximate.
  • Whether the phone still reaches the company.
  • Tax standing. The tax office's lists could not be read.
  • Certificates, capacity, quality and financial health.
  • Sole proprietors. They are not in this directory.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a public directory of companies in Ecuador?

Yes. The Superintendencia de Compañías publishes a directory of every company it supervises as one spreadsheet. It gives the RUC, legal name, legal situation, date of incorporation, address, phone and activity code. No licence statement was found for it. It does not include sole proprietors, email addresses, websites or company size.

How many manufacturers are registered in Ecuador?

The directory read by Testigo lists the companies in section C of the activity classification, manufacturing, and marks each one's legal situation. Testigo holds the ones marked active. Both counts, with the edition date, are at the top of this page and on the coverage page. Sole proprietors are not counted, because the directory covers companies only.

Can I check an Ecuadorian supplier against a tax blacklist on Testigo?

No. Ecuador's tax office publishes a list of ghost companies, but its site could not be read when it was tried, so the list is not on Testigo. A record shows the company's legal situation with the companies regulator only. Check the tax office's own site for the rest.
